Francesco Grosso’s love for wine first began while discovering the smokiness in the bouquet of a glass of Fiano di Avellino, reminding him of the scent of the air of his father’s hometown of Postiglione, Italy. Francesco grew up in Northern New Jersey and graduated from New York University in 1999 with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism. Realizing that food and wine were his passions, Francesco pursued a degree at the Institute of Culinary Education where he completed the Culinary Management program in 2003.
He spent four years at ‘inoteca, where he was ultimately promoted to Wine Director. In this role, Francesco contributed significantly to the restaurant’s wine program, doubling the size of its wine list from 350 to more than 700 selections.
Francesco then joined the Altamarea Group at Alto beginning in September 2008 before becoming the Beverage Director at Marea. Francesco’s dedication and love for wine has helped him hone his career and advance from Sommelier to Beverage Director. Under Francesco’s guidance, Marea’s wine list has received the ‘Best Of’ Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator, and he has assisted in growing the list to over 800 hand-picked selections. He was also named one of thefeast.com's New York “All Star Somms” for November 2010, was a featured Sommelier at the 2010 Jackson Hole Wine Auction, and most recently at Wine Advocate’s La Festa del Barolo.
Francesco’s commitment and dedication to Marea’s wine program has been key to the restaurant’s numerous awards.
