Sean Smith’s passion for food began with a trip to Chinatown during college; he was introduced to a whole new world of food in a tiny restaurant owned by a friend. After graduating from Penn State University with a degree in Elementary Education, Sean began moving around the country working in various restaurants. He settled in the Napa Valley of California for five years, working in a three-star restaurant while continuing to travel extensively around the world.
Realizing he missed the vibrancy of New York City, he moved back in 2008 to join the Altamarea Group at Convivio, before transitioning to the opening team at Marea. He has helped secure the restaurant’s numerous accolades, including the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant in the United States, a three star review from the New York Times, and two Michelin stars. Sean now serves as Marea’s General Manager.
